The Republican Dilemma
All of a sudden Trump has become a liability for the Republican Party's establishment
Republican Congress and Senate members are called to vote for the second impeachment of President Donald J. Trump after Vice President Mike Pence has ruled out the use of 25th Amendment to remove from power the outgoing President.
The purpose of the impeachment seems to ensure - even before punishing Trump - to avoid he could run again in 2024.
In such case, many Republican members of the Senate - where the trial would take place - could fine convenient to remove Trump from any future race in order to improve their respective chances and avoid the Party to sink together with Trump.
On the other end, If Trump remains politically active in the next four years it could be quite difficult for any other Republican candidate to consider running for the Presidency in 2024 taking into account how still large his popularity is among the Republican constituencies.
Here is the dilemma: any Republican senator should take into account how his/her vote to impeach Trump might play among the larger Republican voters who consider themselves still attached to the outgoing President. They could expose to the accusation of betrayal and they could compromise their political ambitions.
In conclusion, they need to remove him from the race but in doing so they risk to remove also themselves.
